CONGREGATIONAL PIANIST

Covenant/Contract

The Congregational Pianist working with the Pastor, Adult Choir Director, and the Worship Committee, shall be responsible for accompanying the liturgy of all services at Christ the King, and accompany the choirs. Interest in youth music would be a plus. This person shall be rooted in the Christian Faith and understand and appreciate the Lutheran tradition as well as collaborate with the pastor and congregational leadership to express the stated mission within and beyond the congregation. Christian convictions shall be apparent in this person’s communication and behavior. Professional training, liturgical sensitivity, ample piano skills including but not limited to: sight reading, 4 part accompaniment, following choral direction, and well-developed interpersonal skills are required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the leadership of the Pastor:

· Serve as accompanist for all regular and special worship services or arrange for a capable substitute.

· Select and prepare and/or provide a prelude, offering music, and postlude for all services.

· Collaborate regularly with the pastor for worship planning and feedback.

· Accompany the Adult Choir when they rehearse and perform as per calendar developed with adult choir director and worship committee. Set fall/spring rehearsal calendars twice a year within worship planning meeting: 1) First Sunday in August, and 2) First Sunday in January.

· Work effectively with all ages.

· Practice with and accompany soloists and/or special music groups as required.

· Participate as a member of the Worship Committee:

-Plan monthly services together the first Sunday of the month for 1–1 ½ hours

-Propose hymns and music for weekly worship and other occasions based on the liturgical year.

-Propose hymns and music from other resources as deemed appropriate.

-Submit music information, including prelude and postlude titles, and any special music such as youth choir, etc. for the bulletin to the secretary on Tues. by 10:00 A.M. each week.

-Coordinate the use of instruments for worship in conversation with Pastor and committee.

· Oversee the use and maintenance of the piano.

· Play for all weddings and funerals or arrange for a capable substitute.

· Promptly respond to congregational communications via phone or email.

ACCOUNTABILITY AND EVALUATION

· Report to the Pastor; collaborate with other staff and the Worship Committee.

· Meet annually with the Pastor for review and access Mutual Ministry team as needed for support.

WORK SCHEDULE

The Choir sings during the month of September through May and rehearses between services at 9am

10:15 – 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th Sundays. Christmas Eve, Lenten Wednesdays. Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday.

Schedule special music for first Sunday when youth choir sings. Additional rehearsals for Christmas and Easter as needed.

· Sunday mornings, special services, rehearsals, worship and music committee meetings, and other times as dictated by responsibilities.

· As a part-time position, it is anticipated that this person will spend about 8 hours per week to fulfill the responsibilities, perhaps a few less hours in summer, a few more in winter.

COMPENSATION

· An annual salary of $9,000, reviewed annually, paid in 12 equal installments.

· 2 weeks annual paid vacation, including Sundays, except Christmas and Easter.

· Designated fees for weddings and funerals as established by the accompanist and Council.
