114 students representing 18 piano and vocal teacher studios competed in the 2017 Competitive Sonatina and Voice Festival on March 4 at Graner Music Recital Hall and Nazarene Bible College. Two recitals were held the following afternoon, featuring performances by the talented winners and recognizing those who placed as honorable mention. The highly qualified judges were Dr. Grace Asquith NCTM, Gayle Grace, Dr. Zahari Metchkov, and Dr. Sam Welsh. Many thanks to the teachers who entered students and helped at the festival!

Competitive Sonatina and Voice Festival
The PPMTA Non-competitive Sonatina Festival was held on Saturday, March 4 at Graner Music recital hall. Many thanks to owner Charlotte Baker for allowing us to use this wonderful venue for our events! There were 54 students of 16 different teachers entered in the event. Three recitals were held in the morning with Sam Welsh and Gayle Grace serving as the judges. Each student performed one memorized movement of a sonatina and received written comments from one of the judges. They were given a medal of participation after their performance.
This festival is an excellent opportunity for students to get practice performing in a recital setting outside of their studio recitals. They get a chance to hear other students of various levels play and also get exposed to a lot of music they wouldn’t hear otherwise. I highly recommend PPMTA teachers to encourage their students to give this festival a try!
