PPMTA BLOG POST May 2017
Greetings PPMTA Membership! I would like to take this space to thank you for the opportunity to be your PPMTA President. My PPMTA Board made it so easy, and I am grateful for their input and all the work they have done. I know that Barbara Taylor will be an excellent leader moving forward. I will remain on the board in the capacity of VP Publicity and look forward to expanding our organization and reaching out to the community.
I urge you all to become involved in one small way in the coming 2017-2018 year. Yes, we can be excellent music teachers without joining a professional organization such as the Pikes Peak Music Teachers Association. I am a better teacher because of the exposure I have gotten to other teachers’ ideas and presentations. I am a better teacher because of the support I have received from my colleagues in this organization. My students are better musicians because of the opportunities they have received through PPMTA.
I know we are in the midst of our own “May madness” – aka recital season! Hang in there and find a way to catch a breather this summer!

I am excited to announce a new piano solo, Red Rocks Rhapsody, written by Kevin Olson. Kevin's work will be available mid August, 2017, at Graner Music. The score is ten (10) pages. After the premiere in Colorado Springs, it will be available in over 800 music stores throughout the nation. I will send out an email when the music is available at Graner Music.
I have attached the recording (mp3) of this lively, late-intermediate piece. You will find Kevin's "Notes from the Composer" attached describing what inspired him to write this piece. This piece is dedicated to the piano students of Colorado Springs.
The cover art (image above) was created by Ariana Richards, national award winning artist (oil). She listened to the music and did a Skype with Kevin, helping her create a painting that reflects Kevin's composition.
A portion of the proceeds will go towards enhancing the lives of underprivileged children, e.g., Shine Nation, the Children for Children Organization, both headquartered in Colorado Springs.

Those of you at our last General Meeting may remember that Joan Sawyer discovered that those teaching in their home in Colorado Springs are required to get a one-time permit from the City of Colorado Springs. Here is the information she sent (thank you Joan!): Here is the link for the Home Occupation Permit application from the City of Colorado Springs. As I recently found out, anyone residing in the city and teaching music lessons in their home, is required to obtain a permit. The fee of $120 is a one-time fee.
